Bushcare Updates

Writer: sihspandcsihspandc

Did you know that St Ives High School is the caretaker of a remnant Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest?

This stunning forest is dominated by Turpentine, Eucalyptus and Angophora trees and is only found in the Sydney basin. It is also critically endangered and so we need to look after this remnant forest really carefully. As such, we have a St Ives High School Bushcare group who meet once a term to work with a wonderful Bushcare Coordinator from Ku-ring-gai Council who helps us to care for the forest, removing weeds and planting grasses, shrubs, bushes and trees. No experience is necessary.

We would love to welcome new members and see as many children and adults as possible attend our first bush regeneration day for the year. So please do come along for as long as you can - we will be working behind the sign in the forest on the far side of Block F (the demountables), down from F12. Even if you can only spend an hour, it all benefits the forest.

Date: Sunday 30 March

Time: 9-12 noon (feel free to come for as long as you can)

Meet: 9am at the school gate behind the hall on Yarrabung Road (or in the forest if you come a bit later)

Bring: A hat, water bottle, gardening gloves and wear long sleeves, trousers and closed in shoes. Tim Tams will be provided (the kids told me to add this!).

RSVP (or any questions): Sandie on sandie.suchet@gmail.com. Please email Sandie to let her know if you are planning to come in case we have to make any changes due to weather conditions.

Maybe the following could also be included in a box with the blurb?

From Sarah, one of our regular parents/volunteers:

Why I love being part of the St Ives High School bushcare team!

1: It’s a friendly, social and welcoming group passionate about helping our environment.

2: It's a calming practice - restoring a bit of balance in our Turpentine/Ironback forest in a thoughtful manner brings me balance in my life.

3: There is always something new to see. Working closely with the ground plants I’ve discovered beautiful flowers and interesting insects to photograph and share with the group.

4:  I learn something new every time. Our professional Bushcare leader Penn, ensures we know how to safely work within forest, and has a wealth of knowledge. Sandie has such passion for our bush environment and a deep cultural understanding that's so interesting to learn about.

5. It's so rewarding to see the positive effect we have had in planting new plants, encouraging animals like Powerful Owls back into the area.
